I had heard some buzz about this new comic series called Lady Robotika from Image Comics, and it sounded right up my alley. The whole thing is co-created by Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Go’s and Bill Morrison, who’s done a lot of work with Bongo Comics. So, a rock star and a comic book artist walk into a bar… just kidding. But seriously, that’s a cool combo!

First, I tried to find some initial information about it, like who are these authors? What’s the content? I found some news talking about them. After a busy weekend at San Diego Comic Con 2010, Meltdown Comics hosted the official launch party for Lady Robotika. It sounds really cool and worth trying.
So, the basic plot is that Jane Wiedlin, playing a version of herself, gets kidnapped by aliens. These aren’t just any aliens, though. They’re huge music fans, and their emperor is obsessed with Earth music. Sounds a bit odd, right? But wait for it, they implant her with nanobots while she’s sleeping during the trip back to their planet. I guess they wanted her to be some kind of super-powered rock star slave?
I managed to snag a copy of the first issue, and it was a wild ride. The artwork was fantastic, really vibrant and energetic, capturing that rock and roll vibe. The story moved quickly, with Jane being abducted and forced to perform for this alien emperor. It was funny, action-packed, and just a bit weird, in the best way possible. The nanobots didn’t quite turn out like the aliens planned, they kinda backfired. Let’s just say Jane wasn’t exactly a compliant prisoner. She ended up with some unexpected abilities, which made things even more interesting. Then I saw there’s a sneak peek at the cover for Lady Robotika (issue #2) and Lady Robotika is treated to a VIP tour of New Detroit Rock City in issue #2. I’m definitely going to follow up on that.
After reading the first issue, I was hooked. I mean, who wouldn’t want to read about a rock star turned into a cyborg by music-loving aliens? I decided to dig a little deeper and see what else I could find. It turns out there was a launch party for the comic at Meltdown Comics after San Diego Comic-Con 2010. I wish I could have been there! It sounded like a blast. Then I found some interviews with Jane Wiedlin and Bill Morrison, they talked about the inspiration for the story and their creative process. It was cool to get some behind-the-scenes info.
