Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into this whole graphic novel thing for a while now, and I finally took the plunge with “Oblivion.” I’d heard some buzz about it, mostly because of that movie with Tom Cruise a while back, you know? Turns out, the movie’s based on this graphic novel, or at least the idea of it.
First off, I had to figure out where to even get this thing. I mean, do people still buy physical books? Turns out, yeah, they do. I remembered I sometimes saw a small comic book shop near my place so I went there first.
- The shop had a decent selection. They don’t have “Oblivion” but recommend me another book.
- I didn’t buy it and went to another famous bookstore called Waterstones.
And, bam, there it was. I bought the book immediately from Waterstones.
I started reading it right there in the store. The artwork is pretty cool, very cinematic, which makes sense, I guess. It’s got that whole sci-fi, post-apocalyptic vibe, and the story starts to pull you in pretty quick. It’s about this guy, a repairman, on a messed-up Earth, and he starts finding out things aren’t what they seem. Standard stuff, but it’s done well.
I finished “Oblivion” in like two days. Couldn’t put it down. It’s a quick read, but it definitely leaves you thinking. And honestly, it made me want to watch the movie again, just to see how they compare.
So, yeah, that was my little adventure getting into graphic novels with “Oblivion.” I found out the book is based on the director Joseph Kosinski’s unpublished graphic novel of the same name, developed with Arvid Nelson for Radical Comics. It was a fun ride, and I’m already looking for what to read next. Maybe something with superheroes, or maybe more indie stuff. Who knows? Any recommendations, hit me up!
