Okay, so I got this book, right? It’s about Alan Lee’s work on “The Lord of the Rings”. You know, the movies? Well, apparently, he did a bunch of stuff for the books too. I’m a big fan of the movies, so I figured I’d check it out.
First off, this thing is huge. It’s one of those big, heavy hardback books. I opened it up and was immediately blown away. It’s full of sketches and paintings, like, a ton of them. I started flipping through the pages, and it’s just amazing to see how these images evolved. There are over 150 of his illustrations in this thing.
Sketches and Paintings
- There are rough sketches that are just outlines of characters or scenes.
- Then there are more detailed drawings.
- And finally, there are these beautiful watercolor paintings.
It’s kind of like watching the movies come to life on paper. I spent a good few hours just going through it all, soaking it all in. I recognized images from the illustrated book. Some I had not seen before. All of them are beautiful.
Alan Lee also wrote some stuff in the book, explaining his process and how he came up with these designs. It’s pretty cool to get that behind-the-scenes look. I mean, this guy won an Oscar for his work on the movies, so you know he’s the real deal. He is the designer for the movie trilogy and also illustrated a special edition of the book. What a legend.
Anyway, I highly recommend this book if you’re a fan of “The Lord of the Rings”, either the movies or the books. It’s a really cool way to see how the visual world of Middle-earth was created. I’m definitely going to be spending more time with this book. Maybe I’ll even try to draw some of these myself, although I doubt I’ll be anywhere near as good as Alan Lee.
