Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea, right? A “Legend of Zelda” themed deck for Magic: The Gathering. It sounds kind of wild, but hear me out. I saw some buzz online about people being all worked up over a SpongeBob and Magic crossover, and it got me thinking, “Why not Zelda?”
I started by jotting down some ideas. I mean, the world of Hyrule is huge, and there are so many characters and creatures that could fit into the Magic universe. I imagined Link as a powerful legendary creature, maybe with some kind of equipment-based abilities. Zelda could be a planeswalker, obviously, with powers related to light and wisdom. And Ganon? Definitely a big, bad, black/red creature with some nasty abilities.
Then I started browsing through my Magic cards, trying to find ones that felt thematically appropriate. I pulled out a bunch of green cards for creatures that looked like they could live in Kokiri Forest, some blue cards for Zora-like beings, and of course some red cards for Gorons and fire-themed stuff. I even found some artifact cards that I thought could represent the Master Sword or the Hylian Shield.
Next, I started building the deck. This was the tricky part. I wanted it to be fun to play, but also capture the feel of a Zelda game. So I added a bunch of creatures, some removal spells, and some enchantments that I thought represented different locations in Hyrule. I spent hours tweaking and testing, swapping cards in and out, trying to get the balance right. It was a mess, honestly, cards spread all over my living room floor, but it was fun.
- First, I focused on getting the mana base right.
- Then, I added the creatures, trying to have a good mix of different types and abilities.
- After that, I worked on the spells, making sure I had enough removal and card draw.
- Finally, I added some lands that I thought fit the theme.
I played a few games with my friends, and it was pretty cool. It wasn’t the most powerful deck ever, but it was definitely unique, and it felt like playing a Zelda adventure. My friends got a good laugh out of it too, especially when I played Link and equipped him with a bunch of artifacts.
The Final Touches
After playing a few games, I made some more changes. I added a few more legendary creatures, like Daruk and Revali, and I tweaked the mana base some more. I even designed some custom tokens to represent things like Rupees and Heart Containers. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it. I ended up with a deck that I was really proud of, and that I think any Zelda fan would enjoy playing.
It’s still a work in progress, though. I’m always looking for new ideas and ways to improve it. Maybe I’ll even take it to a local game store and see how it does against some other decks. Who knows, maybe this “Legend of Zelda” Magic deck will become a thing!
