Today I’m gonna talk about my little project on DC’s Poison Ivy, you know, the one from the comics. I’ve always been a big fan of this character, Pamela Isley, that’s her real name, and her whole eco-terrorist vibe is just so cool to me.
So, I started by diving into some of the comics again, especially after her showdown with that Floronic Man, who is also known as Jason Woodrue. That was some epic stuff. I really wanted to capture her essence, especially with the latest redesign that makes her look like this “Ivy Who Laughs” version. I mean, she’s this Dark Multiverse doppelganger now, how crazy is that?
I gathered a bunch of references, mostly from the comics, and some fan art too, because, why not? There’s some really talented stuff out there. My goal was to create something that felt like Poison Ivy, but also had a bit of my own twist to it. I’m not just copying, I’m creating, you know?
I decided to sketch out a few ideas first. I played around with her look, how she stands, and how she uses her powers. She can control all plant life, which is super badass. I wanted to show that off in my work. I drew her with vines and plants all around, like she’s one with nature, because that is what she is about.
After sketching, I moved on to the digital part. I’m more of a digital guy anyway. I used my tablet and started coloring and shading. I tried to make her look a bit more realistic, but still keep that comic book feel. It was a lot of trial and error, but hey, that’s how you learn, right?
- First, I focused on her face. I read somewhere that one of the writers, Tee Franklin, sees her as autistic, which I thought was super interesting. I tried to give her a thoughtful, intense look, like she’s always analyzing and calculating.
- Then, I worked on her outfit. I kept the green theme, obviously, and added some leaf-like textures to make it look more organic.
- After that, I added the plants. I made sure they looked like they were growing out of her, wrapping around her arms and legs. It’s all about that connection to nature, you feel me?
- Lastly, I played around with the background, giving it a dark, mysterious vibe to match the whole Dark Multiverse thing.
During the process, I also thought about her connection to Harley Quinn. They have this complex relationship, and there is this comic where they even got married! It’s called Injustice: Year Zero, if you are interested. I didn’t include Harley in this piece, but I kept their bond in mind. It adds depth to Poison Ivy’s character, showing she’s not just some villain; she has feelings, she cares about someone, you know?
I also read that she might have Paranoid Personality Disorder, which makes sense. She hates humans because of what they’ve done to the planet. It’s not hard to see why she’s so distrustful and angry. She has no problem with killing a bunch of humans to protect plant life. I tried to capture that anger and determination in her expression.
The Final Result
In the end, I created a piece that I’m pretty proud of. It shows Poison Ivy in all her complex glory – a villain, a hero, a lover, a fighter. She’s all of that and more. This project was a blast, and it reminded me why I love this character so much. She’s not just a pretty face with cool powers; she’s a symbol of nature’s fight against human destruction.
