Alright, let’s gab a bit about this fan art stuff, you know, the pictures folks draw of their favorite things like them moving picture shows and games the young’uns play.

Now, I hear tell it’s alright to put these drawings on your, whatchamacallit, your “website” and your “social medias.” Sounds fancy, but it just means you can stick ‘em up on the internet for folks to see. But, and this is a big but, you can’t be sellin’ them pictures. No sir, no sellin’. That’s stealin’ other people’s stuff, like them “trademarks” and “copyrights.” Think of it like this, if you draw a picture of Mickey Mouse, well, Mickey Mouse still belongs to that Disney fella, even if you give him a funny hat.
- You can show it off.
- But you can’t make money off it.
Long as you ain’t makin’ a penny, you’re probably good. There’s this place called Redbubble, they got all sorts of them fan art things, but they’re special, see? They got the okay from the folks who own them characters and such. So them artists can sell their stuff, but they gotta get permission first, it ain’t just free for all.
I seen some folks drawin’ pictures from them games and movies. They take them characters and make ‘em all cartoony, like them Pixar movies, you know, the ones with the toys that talk? They even made one of that Penguin fella from them Batman stories. Looked real cute, but the show’s already done and gone, they say.
And speaking of shows, there’s this fella, Denzel Washington, a real smooth talker, he’s gonna be in another one of them Black Panther movies. Some young whippersnapper over on that Twitter thing, they made a picture of one of the witches from that musical, Wicked, I think they called it, with her hat pulled down low. Folks get real creative with these things, I tell ya.
Then there’s this fella, he makes them moving pictures on the computer, them 3D things. He made a picture of that Sonic the Hedgehog, looks a whole heap better than the games they been makin’, if you ask me. But it ain’t a real game, just somethin’ he made for fun. Gets folks all riled up though, wishin’ the real games looked that good.
So, you wanna draw them pictures, go right ahead. Just remember, keep your hands off other people’s money. It ain’t right to go sellin’ somethin’ that ain’t yours to sell. Just have fun with it, and let folks enjoy your work, that’s the way to do it. It’s all about sharin’ and bein’ creative, not about fillin’ your pockets with stolen goods, ya hear?
This whole internet thing is a newfangled world for me. But even an old woman like me can understand right from wrong. Be respectful, be creative, and don’t be greedy. That’s the long and short of it.
And remember, if you ain’t sure, best to ask someone who knows. There’s always some young’un around who can explain all this computer stuff. They’re good for somethin’, I guess.
