Well, y’all ever heard of this thing called “Pearls Before Swine”? I reckon you might, but just in case you ain’t, lemme tell ya about it. It’s a comic strip, started by this fella named Stephan Pastis. Now, don’t get confused with them fancy words, it’s just a regular ol’ comic strip, but it’s got some good humor in it. One of the main characters is a pig, and he’s about as clueless as a chicken tryin’ to cross a road. And I reckon that’s where the fun is. You see, there’s a rat in the strip, always tryin’ to drop some “pearls of wisdom” on the pig, but it don’t ever get through. Just like tryin’ to talk sense to a mule, it ain’t never gonna work. That’s what the title’s about – “Pearls Before Swine” – givin’ somethin’ valuable to folks who can’t appreciate it.

Now, what gets real interestin’ is that back in June 2014, a fella named Bill Watterson, the man who created that Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, decided to step into this “Pearls Before Swine” business. Now, I know, y’all probably remember Calvin – that little rascal with the wild imagination, always causin’ a ruckus with his tiger, Hobbes. Well, Bill, he came outta the woodwork and worked with Stephan Pastis for a special strip. Ain’t that somethin’? A man who’s been hidin’ away from the public for years, and then he decides to help out with a comic strip. Well, I’ll be. They sure did raise some eyebrows with that one. Folks loved it, too. It wasn’t just some regular ol’ comic – it was a big ol’ surprise!
So, what did this collaboration mean, y’all might be wonderin’? Well, it was all for a good cause. The money from the special strips was goin’ to help folks fight Parkinson’s disease. Ain’t that a fine thing? Here you got these two comic creators, puttin’ their talents to work for somethin’ bigger than just a laugh. I reckon not many people woulda expected ol’ Bill Watterson to come back into the spotlight like that, but there he was, drawin’ away. The man, he sold some of the original artwork from those strips at an auction, and let me tell ya, they fetched a good price – over seventy thousand dollars! That’s a heap of money for just some funny pictures. But hey, it was for a good cause, so I reckon it’s all worth it.
Now, the comic itself, it’s got all kinds of characters that make ya chuckle. Besides the pig and the rat, there’s a zebra who’s always gettin’ himself into trouble, and a cat who once got arrested by the FBI for sellin’ nuclear technology – I kid you not, this strip is somethin’ else. I guess they wanted to show how a bunch of misfit animals could teach us a thing or two, even if they don’t always get it right. I’ll tell ya though, it sure does make ya think about how folks can miss the value of somethin’ when they don’t know what they got. Like tryin’ to give a cow a gold coin – they’ll chew on it like it’s just a rock. But to the right person, that coin’s worth a lot.
And let’s not forget about the man behind it all, Bill Watterson. He’s been real private over the years, stayin’ outta the limelight after Calvin and Hobbes ended. Folks always wondered what he’d be doin’ after that. Would he keep drawin’, or would he just disappear into the woods somewhere? Turns out, he just didn’t wanna be bothered too much. But when he popped up in “Pearls Before Swine,” it was like a breath of fresh air. It was like seein’ an old friend again, comin’ back after years away, and you could tell he hadn’t lost his touch. Ain’t that just a good feelin’?
Some folks said that Bill Watterson’s return to the comics was like a gift. It was a rare thing, like findin’ a needle in a haystack. He don’t show up in many places, so when he does, it’s a big deal. Even Stephan Pastis, the creator of “Pearls Before Swine,” was surprised. He said it was like gettin’ a surprise visit from an old buddy, and they worked together to make somethin’ real special for the readers. It’s funny how life works out sometimes, ain’t it? You never know when somethin’ or someone will come back into your life and remind you why you loved it in the first place.
So, if you ain’t had a chance to check out “Pearls Before Swine,” I’d say give it a look. It’s not your average comic strip, but that’s what makes it so dang good. It’s got humor, heart, and a whole lotta surprises. And if you see any of them special strips with Bill Watterson’s artwork, well, you better count yourself lucky. You’re lookin’ at somethin’ real rare, that’s for sure. Ain’t life funny like that? Things just show up when you least expect ‘em, and sometimes, they leave you thinkin’ about ‘em long after they’re gone.
