That Godzilla, you know, that big ol’ monster from them movies? Well, they got these things now, these little…what’s they called? Figures. Yeah, figures. My grandbaby, he’s got a whole mess of ’em. Says they’s worth somethin’. I don’t know about all that. But this one, this millennium Godzilla figure, that’s the one he’s always talkin’ about. Says it’s special. This Godzilla 2000, you see.
He showed it to me, this millennium Godzilla figure. It’s all spiky and mean lookin’. Not like that old one, the one they used to show on the TV. That one was kinda…chubby, I guess you’d say. But this one, this millennium Godzilla figure, it’s all sharp edges. Like it’s gonna cut ya just lookin’ at it. It looks newer, you see. He told me it was some kinda special edition or somethin’.
My grandbaby, he lines ’em all up, these figures. He’s got all kinds. Big ones, little ones. He’s got that King Kong one too. He makes ’em fight. Says this millennium one, this Godzilla 2000 millennium figure, always wins. Says it’s the strongest. I don’t know nothin’ about that. They all look the same to me, just a bunch of plastic monsters. I guess that’s why they call it S.H. Monsterarts. Don’t ask me what that means.
He says there are lots of these millennium Godzilla figures. Not just this one. Some are made of that soft stuff, what do they call it? Vinyl? Like them old records we used to have. Says those are good for just lookin’ at. But this one, this one you can move around. It is called a poseable action figure, he said. It’s got joints and things. Make it stand up, make it roar. I guess that’s what kids like to do these days. They got all these Godzilla figures now, these days.

Back in my day, we didn’t have nothin’ like this. We had sticks and rocks. We made our own fun. Didn’t need no fancy millennium Godzilla figure to keep us entertained. But I guess times change. Kids these days, they like these things. I don’t really understand it all. He said some company, called NECA, used to make them. No more. Now it’s this other company, Playmates. Something about competition. And then there’s Bandai. They made ’em too, apparently. Been making them since way back. Before that, it was all different. He said some names, Marusan, Bullmark. Said they looked different, not like the real Godzilla.
He keeps that millennium Godzilla figure in a special box. Won’t let nobody touch it. Says it’s gonna be worth a lot of money someday. I told him, “You keep dreamin’, boy.” But who knows? Maybe he’s right. Maybe that little plastic monster is gonna make him rich. I remember him showing me when he got it. It was called the Godzilla 2000 Millennium figure. He was so excited.
I still don’t see the appeal, myself. It’s just a toy. But it makes him happy, and that’s all that matters. He’s a good boy. Loves his millennium Godzilla figure. And he takes care of it. That’s more than I can say for some of these kids today. Always breakin’ their toys. Not my grandbaby. He respects his things. Especially that Godzilla.
He says there are people who collect these things. Grown adults, mind you. They buy ’em and sell ’em and trade ’em. Just like we used to do with them baseball cards. ‘Cept these are millennium Godzilla figures, not baseball cards. It’s a whole world, he tells me. A whole world of people who love Godzilla. And they all want that millennium Godzilla figure. The best one, he says.
I guess if it makes ’em happy, who am I to judge? It’s their money. They can spend it how they want. Me, I’d rather have a new pair of shoes. Or maybe a nice pie. But these folks, they want that millennium Godzilla figure. And they’re willin’ to pay good money for it. They really like this Godzilla 2000 one.
So, if you see one of these millennium Godzilla figures, and you got a little extra cash burnin’ a hole in your pocket, maybe you should pick it up. Might be worth somethin’ someday. Or maybe not. Who knows? All I know is, my grandbaby loves his. And that’s good enough for me. He’s got a whole bunch of these figures, but that’s his favorite one, that millennium Godzilla figure. He says it is the best one out of all the ones he has. I don’t know about all that, but he sure loves it a whole lot.
